What Is WPM?
WPM stands for Words Per Minute — the standard unit for measuring typing speed. It doesn't count actual words (which vary in length). Instead, it treats every 5 characters — including spaces and punctuation — as one normalised word.
This convention makes scores comparable across different texts. A test with lots of short words and a test with long technical words both produce fair, consistent WPM figures under this definition.

The formula this calculator uses:
Correct characters = Total characters − Errors
WPM = (Correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ (Seconds ÷ 60)
Accuracy = (Correct characters ÷ Total characters) × 100
If you choose "Actual word count" mode, the calculator uses your word count directly divided by minutes, skipping the ÷5 normalisation step.

Calculator vs Live Typing Test
Both tools answer the same underlying question — "how fast do I type?" — but in different ways:
- This calculator — takes numbers you already have and converts them to WPM. Useful for understanding results from paper-based tests, other sources, or hypothetical scenarios.
- A live typing test — measures your actual typing in real time under real conditions. It captures your genuine speed, accuracy, and consistency, including hesitation and correction behaviour that a manual calculation can't capture.
For the most accurate and honest picture of your typing ability, a live typing test is the better choice. This calculator is most useful for understanding the maths behind a score or working through examples.

What Your WPM Score Means
Once you have your WPM figure, here's how to contextualise it:
- Under 30 WPM — below the general adult average; consistent practice will produce quick gains at this stage
- 30–50 WPM — around average for everyday keyboard users; functional for most tasks
- 50–70 WPM — good; above average and comfortable for professional work
- 70–100 WPM — fast; typical of regular touch typists
- 100+ WPM — very fast; the result of deliberate long-term practice
Accuracy matters alongside WPM. A score of 60 WPM at 99% accuracy represents better real-world output than 70 WPM at 85% accuracy, because errors require backspacing and retyping.

Why Accuracy Is Part of the Calculation
Raw character count overstates your speed if errors are included. The standard approach — and what this calculator uses — is to subtract error characters before computing WPM. Errors are then reported separately as an accuracy percentage.
This matters practically: if you type 400 characters in 60 seconds but 60 of them were errors, your effective output is 340 correct characters = 68 WPM, not 80 WPM. The accuracy figure (85%) tells the rest of the story. Together, WPM and accuracy give a complete picture of your typing performance.
As a general guide, aim for 95% or higher accuracy at any WPM level. Below 90%, the speed gains from typing faster are largely cancelled by the time lost to corrections.
